Writing Agoulmim lake is a pleonasm. Because Agoulmim simply means lake in Tamazight. That said, we will have to tell you about this lake located in Algeria in its central part, at an altitude of 1700 m in the Djurdjura mountains, 50 kilometers as the crow flies from the Mediterranean Sea. It is an alpine-type cirque lake. It is one of the few lakes in Africa, along with lake Ifni in Morocco, nestled at this height. Agoulmim is located in the very heart of the Djurdjura National Park, established as a biosphere reserve and world heritage site. It contains many rare and protected plant and animal species. The enormous water reservoir that constitutes Lake Agoulmim supplies numerous underground rivers and numerous fountains in the villages of the North and South slopes.

Lake Agoulmim is a vast natural body of water filled from October-November to June. In winter, it is covered with a white, protective screed. The snow, which symbolizes winter in our mountains and which is an important element of the local climate, is a source of infinite joy for children and skiers and of multiple worries for motorists and travelers. As for animals and plants, they know how to adapt to it more or less. The thick carpet of snow that settles suffocates and protects at the same time: it suffocates by preventing light from reaching the aquatic plants and it protects in the sense that it acts as an insulator preventing the earth from freezing in below. In both cases, these are vital processes for the flora first, and the fauna secondly.

From the end of spring, which does not last long here, it empties just as naturally with the melting of the snow and especially in summer, under the heating effect of the solar rays which deal it the final blow, thus leaving room for a vast and green meadow. This grassy expanse, during the summer, welcomes young campers from the villages of Aït-Bouaddou, who, for two months, organize incessant football tournaments

The place is colonized all year round by tree frogs which give it its very particular color. This frog from the Hylid family is known for its ability to quickly change color to adapt to its environment, but what is disturbing is that it normally only lives in wooded environments, as indicated by his name. Should we conclude that Lake Goulmim was surrounded at a certain time by a pine or cedar forest? The question remains.

In any case, the tree frog, whose size varies between 2 and 6 cm, has the reputation of being a real barometer: it comes out of the water when the weather is humid and rainy and takes refuge there in dry weather.

Like all rare sites, which are very beautiful in all seasons, Agoulmim is subject, with social networks helping, to an overcrowding of visitors who leave behind them a strong ecological footprint, leading to a fragility of natural balances. We should perhaps think about regulating these tourist flows.
